Unlocking Insights from Patient Feedback to Improve Healthcare Quality

Latest News

In a study published in Wiley, researchers have examined whether patient feedback, specifically complaints collected via a public feedback hotline, can effectively predict and promote quality improvement initiatives in hospitals. The study, conducted at a tertiary hospital from 2018 to 2021, sheds light on the potential of patient complaints to guide enhancements in healthcare services. Globally, there’s been a continuous push to develop channels for patient complaints to better understand their experiences and expectations. These insights are crucial for improving the quality of healthcare services. However, the potential of using patient feedback to drive actual quality improvement initiatives has not been fully explored.

The primary aim of this study was to determine if patient feedback from a public hotline could be used to predict and influence the effectiveness of hospital quality service improvements. Researchers performed a retrospective analysis of patient complaint data over a four-year period. Complaints were categorized using the Australian Hospital Patient Experience Question Set, and their characteristics were analyzed for frequency and trends using statistical methods.

The key findings revealed that of the 771 complaints against clinicians, about 75% concerned doctors. The most common reasons for complaints were harm and distress, not cared for, lack of confidence, needs unmet, and not informed. In 2021, complaints about moderate harm and distress caused by doctors surged by 667% from the previous year. Complaints about being not informed, not cared for, and experiencing harm and distress showed statistically significant increases. Additionally, issues of lack of respect, bad attitude, and unprofessional behavior were noted among both nurses and doctors.

The study concludes that patient feedback from public hotlines provides valuable insights into patient experiences. These insights can guide quality care improvements effectively. To enhance care quality, it’s crucial for clinicians to be involved early in the development of quality improvement strategies. Enhancing communication and interaction between doctors and patients is essential for improving patient experiences and trust in medical services.

The findings underscore the importance of utilizing patient feedback not just as a tool for understanding patient dissatisfaction, but as a proactive measure to drive improvements in healthcare services.
