GE HealthCare announced an agreement to acquire the clinical artificial intelligence (AI) software business of Intelligent Ultrasound Group PLC for approximately $51 million. This strategic move will integrate Intelligent Ultrasound’s advanced AI-driven image analysis tools into GE HealthCare’s ultrasound portfolio, enhancing real-time support for OBGYN scans and improving exam accuracy and efficiency.
Phil Rackliffe, President and CEO of Ultrasound and Image Guided Therapies at GE HealthCare, stated, “We are excited to incorporate Intelligent Ultrasound’s innovative technology into our systems. This will streamline workflows, reduce repetitive tasks, and simplify exams, ultimately benefiting both clinicians and patients.”
The acquisition will include Intelligent Ultrasound’s ScanNav Assist AI technology, which powers SonoLystlive and SonoLyst X/IR, currently available on GE HealthCare’s Voluson™ Expert, Voluson Signature, and Voluson SWIFT devices. This technology is expected to drive future AI innovations within GE HealthCare’s product lineup.
Nick Sleep, Chief Operating Officer at Intelligent Ultrasound, who will join GE HealthCare, remarked, “Joining GE HealthCare will accelerate the adoption of our AI technology, making ultrasound even easier for users.”
This agreement also addresses the growing challenges faced by sonographers. With increasing exam complexity and significant shortages in radiology technologists, AI-enabled tools can reduce manual processes and improve reproducibility between users, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care.
The acquisition aligns with GE HealthCare’s precision care strategy, which aims to solve clinical inefficiencies and improve patient care quality. This move follows the company’s 2023 acquisition of Caption Health, further solidifying its leadership in AI-enabled medical devices.
The transaction is expected to close in Q4 2024, pending customary closing conditions. GE HealthCare plans to fund the acquisition with cash on hand.
